A fatal one-vehicle accident killed two people at the intersection of State Highway 35 Bypass and FM 528 at approximately 2:40 a.m., Dec. 21.
According to a press release by Capt. Todd Arendell of the Alvin Police Department, 21-year-old Erasmo Enriquez III of Rosharon was driving a four-door Toyota sedan westbound with his longtime friend, 21-year-old Jesus Treviño of Alvin, as a passenger when the vehicle struck a light stanchion at the intersection.
Enriquez was pronounced deceased at the scene while Treviño was partially ejected and transported by EMS to an area hospital where he later died.
Arendell said “the vehicle had been the subject of a reckless driver call only minutes earlier on the same roadway” in Friendswood.
“The investigation is still underway and at this time investigators are still not sure why the vehicle left the roadway or whether intoxication, speed or distraction played a role in the collision,” Arendell said.
The accident led to partial closures that affected the intersection for over four hours before the scene was cleared at approximately 7:00 a.m.
A two-day barbecue benefit fundraiser was held at 11:00 a.m. at One Church at 220 East Highway 6 in Alvin on Dec. 28 and 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Worship Center at 2427 FM 528 in Alvin on Dec. 29 to help the families of Enriquez and Treviño with funeral expenses.
Erasmo Enriquez’ mother, Theresa Enriquez, said her son was known for the smile he always had, even in times of hardship.
“Even when there was a death, you know, he was saddened, but he was like ‘Look, they’ve gone to be with Heaven, you know,’ and he just looked on the bright side of everything. Everything was going to- he would tell me, ‘Everything’s going to be okay, Mom,’” Theresa said.
“Jesus, he was the same thing,” Theresa said, “They would both give the shirts off their backs for anybody.”
Joint funeral services for Erasmo and Treviño were held Jan. 4 at Froberg Funeral Home at Oak Park.
