Dave Ferguson resigned as executive director of Brazoria County Emergency Services District No. 3, sending his immediately effective resignation Wednesday.

Acting Executive Director Beth Strope, the ESD’s assistant director of finance, said no reason was given by Ferguson for his resignation.

Ferguson’s resignation came five weeks after the termination of former Director of Administration Brian Owens, who was initially placed on administrative leave following an arrest for driving while intoxicated while operating an ESD vehicle.

The ESD has been controversial in recent years as local fire departments claim the ESD has tried to control more decisions that used to be made at the department level.

The controversy reached a peak when the ESD shut down the Liverpool Volunteer Fire Department after the department lost its nonprofit status.

Strope did not say how or when a new executive director would be named.
