ZUMWALT

Patsy Ruth (Smith) Zumwalt departed for her heavenly home on August 27, 2020 at the age of 84 having courageously fought a battle with cancer for many years. She was born at home in Osage, Texas to loving parents James Herman and Velma (Clemons) Smith on September 25, 1935. Patsy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 58 years, Andy J. Zumwalt, her son, Andrew James (Jim) Zumwalt, and her brother, James Wayland Smith.

Patsy is survived by her loving daughter Julie (Zumwalt) Pyburn and husband Mike Pyburn of Alvin, grandchildren Luke Andrew Pyburn of Manvel and Layne Ann Pyburn and great granddaughter, Emery Ruth Williams, of Pearland, sister-in-law, Betty Smith, niece Jennifer Smith-Stuart and daughter Blaney James, two nephews - Dale Smith ( wife Rose), Damon Smith (wife Sylvia) all of the San Antonio area, and a host of precious friends.

Patsy’s early childhood years were spent in Arkansas; a vivid memory told round dinner tables recounted her memory of younger brother James being born December 10th, 1941 - three days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  Her father then honorably served in the United Stated Navy from 1941-1945 after which time he relocated their family to the Alvin area where Patsy has since resided and lovingly called home.

As Homecoming Queen and proud member of the Alvin High School Class of 1953, Patsy not only excelled academically, but also received an award for attending 2nd -12th grade having never been absent or tardy a single day. She further completed what was then called 13th and 14th grades of Alvin Jr. College and was a master of short- hand, English, and typing.

Patsy’s faith in the Lord was paramount throughout her life. She was baptized at age 13 at First Baptist Church of Alvin where she was a faithful member for over 50 years. She and Andy married there, she taught 9th-12th grade girls Sunday School classes, and she served as the church clerk for many years. At the time of her passing, Patsy was a member of Bay Area Church in League City where she attended Bible Study Class and worship services with her many cherished friends.

On February 11, 1956, Patsy and Andy Zumwalt were married in First Baptist Church of Alvin, and she continued working a total of ten years for Amoco at Hastings, serving as the Plant Superintendent’s Secretary. Patsy was an outstanding cook, and she loved sharing her gift of delicious food with her family and friends at numerous gatherings in her home.  After welcoming son Jim in 1964, and daughter Julie in 1966, Patsy devoted the rest of her days to serving her Lord, husband, children, and grandchildren as well as many others God placed in her life’s path.
