Joy Dell (Mikeska) DeWitt, age 80, of Alvin, Texas passed away at MD Anderson in Houston on June 11, 2021.

Joy Dell was born on her parents’ farm on May 26th, 1941 in Kenney, Texas where she grew up helping with chores, working on the farm and picking cotton. She attended Bellville High School and graduated with a Music Degree from Sam Houston State University. She would later earn her Master’s Degree in Education from SHSU.

Joy Dell married the love of her life, James Bart DeWitt, Sr., in 1963.  The couple settled in Alvin, Texas where they raised their two children; Tanya and Bart, Jr.

She was a member of the Alvin Lutheran Church and worked for 35 years as a music teacher in Alvin ISD.  She loved teaching music to her young students.  She was an active member of ADK, Alvin Area Retired School Employees, Alvin Library League, Alvin Museum Society and The Gathering Place.

Her interests included sewing, cooking, reading, and traveling the world to places like China, Antarctica, Alaska, Europe and numerous National Parks.

Joy Dell was a devoted and loving mother.  She was very proud of her family and was excited to become “MiMi” to her four grandchildren.  She loved spending time with her family at their get-togethers and would spend hours cooking and preparing for her company.

Joy Dell was the beloved wife of James Bart DeWitt, Sr., mother of Tanya Overby and her husband Kurt of Alvin, Bart DeWitt, Jr and his wife Kristal of New Braunfels, loving “MiMi” of Jamie DeWitt, Ellison Overby, Reed DeWitt and Bristol Overby.  She was also sister to Reuben Mikeska and his special friend, Jane Herzog, and Robert Mikeska and his wife, Marita.

Visitation was held from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at Scott Funeral Home.  A funeral service was held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at the Alvin Lutheran Church.  Interment followed in the Confederate Cemetery in Alvin.
