George Wayne Smithley Sr., 65, of Alvin, Texas, passed away peacefully Friday, June 28, 2019, with his beloved wife, Janice, by his side. He had fought a brave battle with a long illness. George was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, on November 6, 1953, to George Washington Smithley and Betty Jo Berkland. He loved playing baseball and as a kid was a great pitcher. He enjoyed riding motorcycles (and had several throughout his life). He worked as a surveyor for several companies (Brown & Root, Phillips, CC Carlton & Tom Mac, Inc.). He also oversaw and built many highways and bridges throughout the Houston area.

George was a family man who loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. They were his pride and joy. He enjoyed sharing stories about his life with them. He drew his courage and strength from them and was very proud of all of their accomplishments.

George was preceded in death by his father, George Washington Smithley Jr. and grandparents, George Washington Sr. and Dorothy Smithley and Ray and Lola Berkland.

George is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Janice Zdansky Smithley, who was constantly by his side; his beloved children: George Jr. (Charlann Schedule), Tina (Gabriel Barajas), Rachel (Josiah Bertram), Amanda (Czar Zamora) and Travis. His cherished grandchildren: Brittnie, Gage, Caitlin and Corbin Smithley, Aaron and Aleah Barajas, Marisa and Brendon Bertram and Jewelia, Jarren and Jayleigh Zamora; his mother, Betty Berkland Griffiths; sister, Karen Estes; stepbrother, C.W. Griffiths; many nieces, nephews, numerous other relatives and friends; and his faithful companion, his dog, Chip.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 25, 2019, at Fountain of Salvation Church, 516 W. House St., Alvin, Texas.
