James “Grandpa” Scopel passed from this life July 6, 2013 at home. Grandpa was born on December 22, 1916, in Manvel, Texas. He was the fifth child born to Siro and Dominica Marie Scopel. He was born in a shack on the Scopel home place on FM 1128 in Manvel, Texas. He told stories of his parents running a small dairy farm and raising corn and cotton. At the age of six and one half, he was getting up at 4:00 a.m., milking cows and doing chores before he walked to school. He worked very hard his entire life and that is what kept him going.
Survivors include sons: Siro and wife Pat, and Jackie and wife Carolyn; daughter Marie Varner and husband Dennis; nine grandchildren: Denise Scopel, James Randell Scopel, Jack Allen Scopel and wife Theresa, Jeffery Wayne Scopel, Suzanne Scopel, Darrin Scopel, Douglas Varner, and Dan Varner and wife Jennifer; 14 great-grandchildren: Lindsay, Morgan, Leslie, Jason, Robbie, Corey, Tamera, Justin, Layne, Patrick, Andrew, Drake, Jude and Dash; and numerous great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Josephine “Granny” (Biondolillo) Scopel; parents, Siro and Dominica Marie Scopel; brothers: Primo Scopel and Dismas Scopel; and sisters: Mable Camazzola, Mary Dalmolin and Ulda Caretta.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Alvin and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He enjoyed deer and quail hunting and spending time with his family and visiting with his friends. His greatest pleasure was hard work and riding the pasture looking at his cows.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at Scott Funeral Home, with a Rosary recited at 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 11, 2013 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Rev. Jack Franko O.M.I. officiating, 110 E. South St., Alvin, TX 77511, with interment following in Manvel Cemetery, Manvel, Texas.
A luncheon will be served after the graveside services at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Hwy. 6 @ CR 48, Manvel, Texas.
