Mildred “Millie” Ruth Gurka, age 93 of Alvin, Texas passed away Sunday, January 3, 2021 at Cornerstone Hospital in Webster, Texas. Millie was born April 6, 1927 in Muldrow, Oklahoma and was a resident of Alvin for 50 plus years. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and she will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Millie was so proud of her two grandchildren, Justin and Alyssa, and loved them with all her heart. Millie is preceded in death by her husband, Clemens “Junior” Gurka; parents, Marion and Minnie Pettit.
Millie was an extremely proud Native American Cherokee Indian registered as a Tribal Citizen with the Cherokee Nation. Her grandfather and father were part of the “Trail of Tears”, in which the US Government relocated over 100,000 Indians from their native lands over 5,000 miles. Millie was fluent in American Sign Language, as both of her parents were deaf mutes. She knew sign language before she could even speak words.
Millie is survived by her sons, Terry Gurka and wife Starla; Eddie Gurka and wife Melanie; daughter, Darleen Savedra-Jones and wife Renee; grandchildren Justin Gurka and Alyssa Gurka; along with many other extended family members and friends.
Visitation was held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, January 8, 2021 at Scott Funeral Home. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Scott Funeral Home with Interment following at Confederate Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Terry Gurka, Justin Gurka, Isidore “Joe” Gurka, Julius “Buddy” Liescheski, Robert Lee Gurka, Joe Gurka, Glen Wilson, and Eddie Cornelius.
Honorary Pallbearers were Steven “Shorty” Gurka, Aaron James “AJ” Gurka, Darien Gurka, Humberto Ramirez.
The family would like to recognize the doctors, nurses and staff at Clear Brook Crossing, Southeast Memorial Hospital and Cornerstone Hospital, especially the nurses for their care, more specifically Nurse Angie Krenek for giving us the Christmas gift of Zoom meetings so we could see and talk with our mom; special appreciation to Millie’s “gang” at Clear Brook – Bill, Polly, and Susie for watching over each other; Connie Butron for 35 years of weekly hair appointments; Haley Miller for sharing her beautiful voice during the service; and Deacon Allen Stanton from St. John The Baptist, Catholic Church for officiating. Lastly, many thanks to Kevin Scott and Scott Funeral Home for all of their assistance.
