Despite suffering a heartbreaking five-set defeat at home to Santa Fe three days earlier, the Manvel Lady Mavericks regrouped for a 25-21, 14-25, 25-9, 13-25 and 15-10 road triumph in at Texas City Friday night.
The victory helped the second-place Manvel girls (12-4 overall, 8-2) maintain a two-match lead over both Santa Fe and Texas City in the league standings. Senior outside hitter Aryn Johnson exploded for a triple double outing with 14 kills, 27 assists and 13 digs to lead the way.
Junior outside hitter Kenzie Smith exploded for a match-high 33 kills and added 17 digs for a double double, as Santa Fe stunned the Lady Mavericks in five sets by 25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 17-25 and 15-13 scores on Oct. 20 at the MHS Competition Gym.
Johnson also delivered a double double for Manvel with 15 kills and 14 digs, as did senior outside hitter Haley Turner with 14 kills and 14 digs and setter Jayden Walker with 35 assists and 14 digs. However, the Lady Mavs were unable to contain Smith’s presence at the net with Allie Walton also turning in a double double with 53 assists and 12 digs for the Lady Indians.
The teams battled to five ties during the fifth and deciding set before back-to-back Manvel miscues placed Santa Fe with a 14-12 match-point lead. The Lady Mavs cut it to 14-13 on a Lady Indians’ error, but Smith followed with a spike winner to close it out.
Manvel next hosts Galveston Ball Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
The Lady Mavs jumped to an early 4-2 lead in the opening set behind kills by Johnson and Devyn Lewis. Smith smashed back-to-back winners to quickly tie it, though, Waltton followed with three aces in her next four services to cap a 6-0 and 8-4 Lady Indians’ advantage.
Manvel never recovered from the onslaught with Santa Fe increasing the margin later to 19-11 and Smith later providing the game-point kill.
Lyric Johnson (12 kills) spurred the Lady Mavs’ comeback in the second set with the sophomore’s three kills paving the way to an early 8-1 cushion. Jordan and junior middle blocker Mary Kate-Preston (eight blocks) also came up with key kills and stuffs at the net, respectively, and Johnson’s floor blow evened the match at a set apiece.
Johnson joined Jordan, Turner and Lewis with early third-game kills, while Bea Angeles and Walker both drilled aces to give Manvel a 10-6 edge. Santa Fe rallied to tie it a 12-12, though, and took the upper hand for good on Dru Hawkins’ kill.
The teams were also locked in a 12-all stalemate in the fourth game when Preston took charge with a block and a kill sandwiched between Johnson’s blow and a Santa Fe error for a 16-12 Manvel lead. Lewis’ ace was later complemented by Turner’s set-point winner to take things to a winner-take-all scenario in the fifth.
The Lady Mavs erased a 5-1 Santa Fe lead in the fifth, but were later unable to take advantage of serving errors on consecutive Santa Fe rotations.
Other match totals included Angeles with 20 digs and three aces, Morgan Sellers with 16 assists, Jordan with three blocks and Walker with two aces.
In other area volleyball action, both Alvin and Shadow Creek suffered defeats to their Pearland ISD foes Tuesday night
Alvin took Pearland in the limit in the two games, but were unable to prevent a 23-25, 23-25 and 16-25 sweep at the AHS Competition Gym.
Match totals included Teresa Garza with 12 kills and 17 digs for a double double, Korrigan Wright with 15 assists, Lindsay Parthum with 13 digs, Anni Shewmake with nine assists and Ana Garza and Addison Hansen with six kills apiece.
The Lady Yellowjackets (14-6 overall, 6-4 in 23-6A) rebounded with a 25-12, 25-20 and 25-16 sweep Friday at Alief Hastings. Match totals included Mackenzie Strban with eight kills, Ana Garza with seven kills and 11 digs, Shewmake and Wright with 14 assists apiece, Lulu Hernandez with 11 digs and Teresa Garza with seven kills.
Alvin then rallied for a 25-14, 23-25, 14-25, 25-14 and 15-5 five-set non-district win over Dobie on Saturday at home. Match totals included Teresa Garza with 18 kills and 19 digs for a double double, Wright with 17 assists and 11 digs for a double double, Shewmake with 21 assists, Ana Garza with 12 digs and Strban with 11 digs.
Alvin next hosts Shadow Creek Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
The Lady Sharks were also swept in straight sets by Dawson by 16-25, 19-25 and 20-25 scores. Match totals included Michelle Murphy with 15 assists and nine digs, Ella Hestand with 12 digs, Haleigh Carter with nine digs and Aria Rideaux, Kayla Wilson and Deja Benjamin with five kills each.
Shadow Creek next plays at Alvin on Oct. 27.
