The Broads with Rods 12th Annual Fishing Tournament for Women will be held May 11, at Captain Marks Bastrop Marina, which is located at 4515 Trammel in Freeport. Broads with Rods is a one-day fishing tournament for women held annually to assist organizations that service families in need, the military or senior citizens in Brazoria County. It is a non-profit organization that strives to serve the needs of those individuals that need assistance through services and programs.
These organizations enable these individuals to remain a part of their community, while maintaining their dignity, independence and purpose of life. There is a live auction each year with auctioneer Kenny Rodriguez of Alvin, who donates his time to help raise money and continue the organization’s mission to bless those in need. The tournaments have all been record-breaking events every year.
Kidz Harbor, of Brazoria County, will again be the recipient of a minimum of $13,000, which is what the auction made in 2018. Kidz Harbor continues to be a “lighthouse” to children in need of special services. There will also be a silent auction, along with vendor booths to help boost their sales.
A crawfish boil contest will take place and all you can eat crawfish will be sold for $20 per person. Proceeds of the crawfish sale also help organizations that service those in need of assistance. There will be vendor booths again that will help boost sales for the vendors. Another major event is Della Meredith, who will perform live with her chain saw and wood-carving gift. Meredith is well known in the Houston area for demonstrating her wonderful talent. There will also be a live band that will provide the entertainment with a dance after the Broads with Rods ceremony. Cash prizes will also be awarded to all first, second and third place winners in categories of largest slot red, the largest trout and largest flounder by weight.
There are fun pots for the largest hardhead, largest croaker and red fish with the most spots. The amount of the cash prize money is determined by the number of entries. A little league division, Lil’ Broads with Rods, was added in 2016 for girls ages 8-14. Lil’ Broads winners also receive a cash prize determined by the number of entries. Lil’ Broads also added a third place for the largest trout by weight.
“We encourage daughters to fish with Mom to continue this mission. Our vision is to one day be able to give out scholarships to students interested in pursuing a career in marine biology, Texas Parks and Wildlife or oceanography,” added Hooker.
The tournament also raises funds with the sale of T-shirts and barbecue plates to help with the operation of the event. Volunteers from the Houston Fire Department, friends and family help organize this annual event that continues to grow every year.
