The Alvin Yellowjackets dropped a 44-43 nailbiter to hosting Pasadena High on a last second winning bucket by the Eagles Friday in Pasadena.
The victory gives the Jackets a 2-1 start to the 2020-2021 season with Alvin opening with a 56-53 triumph over Sam Rayburn here on Nov. 13.
The Yellowjackets, who host Friendswood late Saturday and next play Brazoswood in Clute on Nov. 24 at 1 p.m., outlasted Pasadena Memorial in a 64-62 overtime thriller on Nov. 16 in non-district boys’ basketball action at the AHS Competition Gym.
Israel Llamas came up with a steal to send the game with Memorial into overtime, while Kendrick Bailey hit a pair of free throws to give Alvin the lead for good during the extra period.
Bailey also paced the Jackets in scoring with 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Brayden Wright added 15 points and eight rebounds.
In the win over Rayburn, Wright delivered a double double with 23 points and 19 rebounds and Bailey provided 12 points and five steals. Llamas chipped in seven steals, as well.
In other area action, the Manvel Mavericks collected a 59-45 triumph over Cinco Ranch at home on Friday. High scorers for the Mavs included Azai Woods with 17 points, Shaun Walker with 13 points and Mason McBride with 11 points.
The Manvel boys next play 1 p.m. road games at Dekaney and Ridge Point on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
The Alvin Girls are also off to a solid start despite falling at home to Clear Lake 51-47 on Nov. 17.
The Lady Jackets (4-2) have posted wins over C.E. King (53-44), Sam Rayburn (51-28), Pasadena Memorial (51-42) and Clear Brook (44-37 on Friday).
In the Memorial contest, Alvin rallied from a 21-20 halftime deficit with a 16-4 run to start the second half. Savannah Rakowitz also drained a three-pointer to spark a 7-0 Lady Jacket run in the fourth quarter after the Lady Mavs had cut the deficit to 41-40.
Mercedes Mancha paced the Lady Jackets with 13 points and Lauryn Wright added 11 points. Vakeria Smith also pulled down six rebounds and Katy Barajas had six steals.
The Lady Jackets next play Clear Falls on Dec. 1 in League City at 7 p.m.
In other area action, the Shadow Creek boys opened their season with a 100-52 rout of Houston Village on Nov. 17. Ramon Walker led the way with 21 points, followed by Shawn Jones with 17 points, Brian Gordon with 16 points and Devyn McCree with 10 points.
The Shadow Creek girls were also victorious on Nov. 17 with a 60-49 victory over Cinco Ranch in Katy. Bre`yon White pumped in 19 points and 13 rebounds for a double double, while Brooklyn Brown added 14 points and Rachiel Anderson chipped in 12 rebounds.
The Lady Sharks (5-1), who fell 56-49 at Langham Creek on Friday, next host Dulles on Nov. 24 at noon
The Manvel Lady Mavericks (5-2) suffered a narrow 42-40 defeat at Katy Taylor on Nov. 18, but came back to top Cy Springs 65-58 on Friday. Manvel next hosts Clear Falls on Nov. 24 at 1 p.m.
