“The key for us in the fifth game was discipline and energy,” Alvin head coach Sasha Blake said following the match. “If we can our play and work our system, then we can have the energy behind it to move throughout balls to keep fighting hard and be resilient.

“They were up 4-0 I think after the first four serves. We just need to keep working and not let that defeat us.”

The Lady Jackets would need to call on the above reserves throughout the evening. Texas City jumped out to a commanding 18-10 lead enroute to winning the opening set and then threatened to take a 2-0 game cushion with a 15-8 advantage in the second set.

While batting back to even the issue at 16 apiece, Alvin soon found themselves   trailing again at 24-21 with a game point in the balance.

However, Addison Hanson came up with a clutch stuff on Texas City’s Ashlynn Lewis at the net to cut it to 24-22, while Shewmake’s service coaxed back-to-back miscues by the Lady Stings’ defense to tie it at 24-24.

After Duckworth’s spike gave Alvin its first lead of the set, Texas City was cited for double contact on another Shewmake service to even the match at one game apiece.

The third game followed almost the identical pattern with the Lady Stings seizing control early, using a pair of blocks from Veronica Victoria to build a 9-4 cushion. Alvin rallied to  take the upper hand at 15-14 on a pair of Ana Garza aces, but the lead proceeded to change hands four times before the set was decided.

Kills by Webster and Teresa Garza finally helped Alvin move to game point at 24-21 and despite the Lady Stings closing within 24-23, Garza delivered a perfect tip over the Texas City front line to give Alvin to a 2-1 set lead.

The Lady Stings dominated the fourth set behind Lewis and Haley James and also went out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth. Alvin ultimately tied it at 8-8 on Ana Garza’s kill, though, and Webster followed with the go-ahead ace.
