Preston stuffs shot

Preparing for their district leading showdown at Friendswood, the Manvel Lady Mavericks cruised to a 25-12, 25-17 and 25-11 straight set home sweep over La Porte in 22-5A volleyball action, Sept. 14 in Manvel.

The victory gave the Lady Mavs an identical 6-0 league mark with the Lady Mustangs heading into the teams’ meeting.

Manvel carried the momentum from the sweep over La Porte and outlasted the Lady Mustangs by 25-21, 25-23, 16-25, 21-25 and 15-9 scores to take over sole possession of the top spot in the 22-5A standings, Sept. 17.

Match totals for the Lady Mavs (21-11 overall, 7-0) included Lyric Jordan with 15 kills and six blocks, Devyn Lewis with 14 kills and 11 digs for a double double along with four blocks, Kenedy Massie with 38 assists, Mary Kate Preston with nine kills and 11 blocks, Bea Angeles with 11 digs, Brooke Wight with seven kills and Amari Jackson with five blocks.

The Lady Mavs next host Baytown Lee Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Leading the way for Manvel was Jordan with 12 kills, Preston with nine kills and five blocks, Lewis with six kills and 19 digs, Cassidy Browning with 10 digs, Angeles with nine digs and three aces, Wight with six kills, Massie with three aces and Morgan Sellers with two aces.

In other area volleyball action, the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets watched their five-match win streak halted by Pearland by 13-25, 16-25 and 25-27 scores here, Sept. 14.

Match totals for the Lady Jackets included Ana Garza with 15 kills, four blocks and eight digs, Janey Anderson with 20 assists, Coryn Breaux with 21 digs, Addison Hansen with five kills and four blocks, Korrigan Wright with seven digs and Wylie Singleton with four kills.

The Alvin girls then bounced back to sweep Alief Hastings Friday on the road by 25-17, 25-22 and 25-12 scores to move their record to 13-18 overall and 2-2 in 23-6A.

Alvin next hosts Shadow Creek Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Sharks also suffered a 23-6A sweep at the hands of Dawson by 6-25, 12-25 and 16-25 scores, Sept. 14 in Pearland.

Match totals for the Lady Sharks (18-13 overall, 1-1) included Mackenzie Collins with eight kills, Sarah Du with 12 assists and Ella Hestand with 12 digs.
