Both the Manvel Mavericks and Shadow Creek Sharks got off to a big leads and hung on to win their week two contests on the gridiron.
Manvel 41 West Brook 27 - The Mavs evened their record at 1-1 after holding off the Bruins’ second half comeback, Thursday in non-district action at Beaumont ISD Stadium.
Andrew Riley scored on a 5-yard run for the Mavs in the opening quarter and quarterback Kaeden Smith hit Elijah Williams with a 41-yard scoring strike to make it 14-0 in the first.
Williams then exploded for a 75-yard punt return in the second and Smith’s 17-yard keeper helped Manvel take a 27-7 lead into the dressing room. West Brook erupted for three TD’s in the third to pull within one score twice, but Ja`vhari Taylor’s 27-yard TD reception and Steve Polk’s 6-yard run helped keep the Bruins at bay.
The Mavs next host Angleton in the 10-5A Division I opener for both teams, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. The game is also Manvel’s homecoming.
Shadow Creek 37 Clear Springs 26 - The Sharks improved to 2-0 with an 11-point non-district victory over the Chargers, Friday at AISD Freedom Field.
Aiden Bui’s 25-yard field goal gave Shadow Creek an early 3-0 lead and while the Springs took the upper hand at 7-3 a little later, quarterback Duke Butler hooked up with Caleb Washington to give the Sharks the lead for good at 10-7.
Corey Swiney then recovered a Chargers’ fumble and rambled 49 yards to paydirt to give the Sharks a 16-7 advantage at intermission.
Tylik Burton exploded 92 yards with the second half kickoff to extend the lead to 23-7 and Butler (14 of 17 for 159 yards, 2 TD’s) hit Joshua Best with a 32-yard TD pass for a 30-7 lead.
Justin Qualls also had a rushing TD in the contest for Shadow Creek, who next plays Bridgeland, Sept. 10 at FCU Stadium in Cypress at 6 p.m.
