A  total of 11 football student athletes from Alvin ISD received all-state academic honors from the Texas High School Coaches’ Association.

Nine Alvin Yellowjackets were named to the THSCA’s list which included: Cade Bingham, Elijah Harris and John Hoffman to the second team and honorable mention nods went to Gavin Guthrie, Marshall Garcia, Charlie Fox, Trevor Singleton, Zach Hammond and Gage Johnson.

Matthew Allison and Nicholas Hudson also earned honorable mention nods from Shadow Creek.

To be nominated for academic all-state, a student must be: an athlete, student trainer or manager in good standing with the team; of good moral character; and a senior.

Other qualifications include having an overall grade point average of 92 or above (including courses from grades 9-11 and courses completed from grade 12). Weighted GPAs are accepted.

Five area student volleyball athletes also received Class 6A All-State Academic honors from the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

The list included Alvin’s Addison Hansen and the Shadow Creek foursome of Chioma Aguoru, Sarah Du, Ella Hestand and Aria Rideaux.

Martin named 2021 Landry Coach of the year winner - Former Manvel Mavericks’ coach Kirk Martin, now at Colleyville Heritage, was named the 2021 winner of the Tom Landry Coach of the Year award on Dec. 6.

Martin, who guided the Mavs to state finalist appearances in 2011 and 2011, coached the Panthers to the 5A state quarterfinals this season.

The Landry Award also recognizes a Coach of the Year, who exemplifies the Christian values that defined Tom Landry on and off the field. A coach’s job is first about teaching life skills and molding young lives.

The Landry Award Coach of the Year, selected by Greater Dallas Fort Worth FCA leadership and The Landry Award voting panel, is one who encourages leadership, selflessness, maturity, respect and kindness.
