Alvin kept a tight hold on first place in the 23-6A Baseball standings with a 2-1 victory over Pearland Dawson March 23 night at Nolan Ryan Field and a 2-0 win over Strake Jesuit Friday in Houston
The two victories allowed the Yellowjackets (13-2-1 overall, 5-0 in district) to increase their 23-6A leads to two games over Pearland, Dawson, Shadow Creek and Strake Jesuit. Alvin next hosts Alief Taylor, Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Dawson jumped to a 1-0 lead on Hayden Curry’s RBI in the first inning of the March 22nd contest, but Wyatt Rayhill and Caleb Gaston drove in the tying and go-ahead tallies for Alvin in the second and third innings, respectively.
Cooper Williams picked up the win for the Jackets on the mound, limiting the Eagles to five hits and two walks in a complete game performance and striking out six. The freshman hurler also worked out of a bases loaded jam in the game’s later stages. Clayton Ayres also entered the contest in relief and picked up a save for the second straight game.
Kyler Mentzel followed up Williams’ solid mound outing with a 16-strikeout performance in the win over Jesuit. Tanner Marek collected a pair of hits and Connor Keithley and Gaston drove in the runs.
In other area baseball action, the Manvel Mavericks topped Baytown Lee, 13-2 in 22-5A play on the road March 23 and then topped Houston Waltrip 5-2, Friday in Manvel. Tyson Dawson led the way against Lee with four hits in five plate appearances and slugged a home run to highlight a four-RBI game.
Christian Garnett provided three hits and three RBI’s, while Mickey Johnson joined Isaiah Walker and winning pitcher Sam Simmons with two hits apiece. Simmons worked the first four frames, allowing three hits and striking out three.
Dawson and Walker drove in two runs apiece against Waltrip and Johnson provided a pair of hits
The Mavs next host Santa Fe Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Shadow Creek (12-5 overall, 3-2 in district) also picked up a run-rule victory on March 23, blanking Elsik 14-0 in Pearland and followed by edging Pearland 4-3 at home Friday night.
Aidan Proffitt and Luis Quintero combined with two Shark hurlers for a no-hitter.
Jacob Rios paced the Sharks’ attack with four hits and three RBI’s and Aidan Grigsby delivered three hits and three RBI’s. C.J. Phipps added two RBI’s and Tre Broussard chipped in a pair of hits.
In the win over Pearland, Shadow Creek jumped to an early 4-0 lead and fended off an Oilers’ rally. Sebastian Soliz picked up the win on hill, while Grigsby collected two hits and an RBI and also earned a save in relief.
