The Manvel Mavericks got a complete game performance from starter Eric Benitez and later held on for a 5-3 victory over Houston Waltrip in a one-game Class 5A Bi-District Baseball Playoff game Friday night at Mavericks’ Field.
Manvel (13-13), who jumped to a 3-0 lead after one inning, advances to play Santa Fe in the area round later this week at a site and time to be determined.
Benitez struck out 11 in six innings of work on the mound, while allowing four hits and three walks. Myles Simmons and Jackson Sweeney led the way offensively for the Mavs with a pair of hits and an RBI apiece. Tyler Labbe and Vicente Robledo both chipped in an RBI each, as well.
Making their first ever playoff appearance, the Shadow Creek Sharks also collected narrow 8-6 and 6-4 victories to sweep their best-of-three series with Milby Thursday in Houston and Friday in Pearland.
The Sharks (19-8-1) will play Port Neches-Groves in the second round at a site and time to be determined later this week.
Quentus Miles drove in three runs in the Thursday series opener for SC, while Jeremy Jones delivered a pair of RBI’s in the second game.
The Sharks jumped to a 3-0 lead in the opener with winning pitcher Sebastian Soliz helping his own cause with a first-inning RBI single, while Benjamin Greer scored on a passed ball and Joseph Gomez singled home Jones.
Shadow Creek also delivered a big first inning in Friday's game with five runs crossing the plate.
