Manvel High School rolled to a pair of 5A bi-district soccer playoff victories Thursday evening at AISD’s Freedom Field in Iowa Colony.
The Lady Mavericks blanked Houston Austin by a 9-0 count in the opener, while the Mavericks followed with a 5-1 triumph over Houston Waltrip.
In the girls’ contest, Toni Reid joined Anahi Altimarano and Lizbeth Granados with two goals apiece and also piercing the net for the Manvel girls (18-6-1) was Hillary Griffin, Alexia Salazar and Nicole Sanow.
The Lady Mavs will face Nederland (who defeated Santa Fe 6-0 in their bi-district contest) Tuesday night at Barbers Hill High School at 7 p.m. in the area round.
Michael Dike’s two goals paved the way for the Mavs in the nightcap. Fernando Adame also joined Talal Gbamgbola and Alejandro Morales with a goal apiece.
The Manvel boys advance to face Goose Creek Memorial at Pasadena's San Jacinto South College Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the area round.
In other area action on Friday, the Shadow Creek girls emerged victorious in their first ever postseason match at Freedom Field, while Alvin High School suffered consecutive hard luck defeats to George Ranch and Strake Jesuit, respectively, in 6A action at AISD Memorial Stadium.
The Lady Sharks (17-7-1) topped Waltrip by a 4-1 count, thanks to Jaelyn Scott’s two goals and one each by Nyla Johnson and Alicia Sanchez.
Shadow Creek advances to meet Texas City in the area round on Tuesday at Friendswood’s Henry Winston Stadium at 5:30 p.m.
In the first game at Memorial, the Lady Yellowjackets gave Ranch everything it could handle, before dropping a 4-1 decision. With Alvin (7-8-1) trailing 1-0 early in the first half, senior Kate Recendez launched a perfect cross field shot from 10 yards out, which sailed over the outstretched hands of the Lady Longhorns’ keeper to tie the contest at 1-1 at the 14-minute mark.
However, Ranch took the upper hand again a little over a minute later and after the Lady Jackets just missed evening things on a blast that banged off the left post, the Lady Longhorns scored their third goal to take a 3-1 advantage into intermission.
Jesuit scored two goals in each half to capture the nightcap.
The Alvin boys were competing in the playoffs for the second straight season, winning the District 24-6A Championship in 2018.
24-6A was coming off a turbulent week, where a combined three ineligible player infractions by Clear Creek ISD schools changed the Lady Jackets’ bi-district opponent from Brazoswood to George Ranch and also moved the Yellowjackets into the boys’ playoffs, as a result.
