Jaden Hannah grabbed a 43-yard scoring reception on the game’s opening possession and the Kempner Cougars spoiled the Alvin Yellowjackets’ home football opener with a 35-0 triumph Friday night at AISD Memorial Stadium.
Hannah collected the pass from Cougars’ quarterback Michael Ealy on just the fifth play from scrimmage.
Both teams struggled holding onto the ball with a 10 combined lost fumbles in the contest. Linebacker Hayden Barron made a pair of recoveries for Alvin, while Angel Lopez joined fellow linebackers Jax Gordon and Thomas Gabel with recoveries.
Other Alvin highlights included quarterback Gavin Gutherie scrambling 14 yards for a first down in the second half and other first down carries went to Daniel Blume, Ronald Broussard and QB Brayden Vincent.
The Cougars increased their lead to 12-0 on Jalen Bates’ 42-yard return off a partially blocked punt and Kempner also gained a safety on QB sack in the end zone.
The Cougars later pushed their lead to 21-0 at the half.
The Jackets next play Tompkins on Sept. 14 at Rhodes Stadium in Katy at 7 p.m.
Shadow Creek 49 Magnolia 0 - The Sharks jumped to a quick 21-0 first period lead and held Magnolia to only 133 yards of total offense to dominate their home opener Friday night at AISD’s Freedom Field in Iowa Colony.
SC signal caller Kyron Drones scored from a yard out to give the Sharks a 7-0 lead, while Jay’Veon Bell added a 15-yard scamper to the goaline. Drones later fired TD passes of two yards to Seth Jones, 82 yards to Carlton Guidry, 25 yards to Randy Masters and 30 yards to Kelvon Brown.
Drones, who threw for 279 yards with 14 completions in 21 attempts, also rambled for a 31-yard scoring run late in the contest.
Sharks’ defensive totals included Greg Brown, Jorge Jones and Chanceller Byers with fumble recoveries.
Shadow Creek (2-0) next hosts Alief Elsik on Sept. 13 at Freedom Field at 7 p.m.
