Coming off a tournament title victory at the Brazosport ISD Holiday Classic earlier in the week, the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets gave Clear Creek everything they could handle in 24-6A girls’ basketball action here Friday afternoon.
However, the Lady Wildcats managed to escape with a 48-43 overtime victory at the AHS Competition Gym.
Olivia Shaw scored the go-ahead bucket for Creek to open the extra period. Mariah Byone hit 1 of 2 free throws to cut the margin to 43-42, but Alvin (12-10 overall, 0-2 in district) wouldn’t get any closer. Mercedes Mancha led the Lady Jackets with 12 points and Byone added 10 points.
The Lady Wildcats led 28-24 at intermission and extended their advantage to 38-31 heading into the final regular period.
However, Mancha drilled a three-pointer to pull Alvin within 41-37 with 53 seconds remaining, while Byone provided a field goal and a free throw to tie it at 41-41 on the next two possessions.
The Lady Jackets had a chance to win it after Creek was called for a traveling violation with 11.78 seconds left, but Mancha’s shot hit off the rim as time ran out.
Alvin collected the tourney title at Brazosport with wins over Porter (52-49), Brazosport (42-39), Port Neches-Groves (41-40) and Brazoswood (45-38) in the title game.
Emma Robles earned tournament most valuable player honors and was joined on the all-tournament team by Mancha.
The Lady Jackets next play Clear Falls on Tuesday in League City at 7 p.m.
In League City, the Yellowjackets dropped a 58-38 decision to Creek. Individual scoring totals weren’t available at press time.
The Jackets advanced to the sliver championship game at the Calallen Tourney earlier in the week with Brayden Wright and Sam Bell both collecting all-tourney honors.
The Alvin boys next host Clear Falls on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
In other area hoop action, both Manvel varsity squads collected wins over Rosenberg Terry on Friday.
The Mavericks topped the Rangers by a 69-45 count at home. Trailing 12-10 after one period, Manvel outscored Terry 18-11 in the second quarter to take a 28-23 lead at the break.
Jacob Koontz paced the Mavs with 15 points, while Shawn Walker and Myles Levine added 12 points apiece. Manvel next plays at Lamar Consolidated on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The Lady Mavs won by a 64-41 count in Rosenberg and next host Consolidated on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Shadow Creek also swept their games with Foster on Friday. The SC boys improved to 5-0 in 24-5A and 15-2 overall with a 101-63 rout over the Falcons in Pearland.
The Sharks jumped out to a commanding 32-15 lead after one period and never looked back. Shawn Jones pumped in 24 points to lead the way, while Ramon Walker delivered a 22-point performance and Zy Morlte added 17 points. Other double figure scorers for the Sharks included Will Young with 15 points and Randy Masters with 13 points.
Shadow Creek next plays at Fort Bend Marshall on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Lady Sharks (18-4 overall) also remained unbeaten in league play with a 74-45 romp over Foster in Richmond.
Bre`yon White led the way for the 5-0 with 16 points, followed by Brooklyn Brown’s 13 points, 11 points each by Rachel Anderson and Lala Trail and 10 points by Sydni John-Baptiste.
