Despite 16 points by Mercedes Mancha, the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets came up on the short end of a 51-45 decision to Clear Lake in 24-6A girls’ basketball action Friday night at the AHS Competition Gym.
The Lady Jackets (13-13 overall), who were coming off their first district win a week earlier at home against Dickinson, also led the Lady Falcons by a 25-18 count at intermission.
However, Lake outscored Alvin by an 18-7 count in the third quarter to take the upper hand at 36-32 and led by as many as nine at 47-38 in the fourth.
Alvin cut the gap to 47-43 on Mariah Byone’s three-point play and Mancha’s three free throws with 48 seconds remaining, but the Lady Jackets would get no closer.
The Lady Jackets next play Clear Creek on Tuesday in League City at 7 p.m.
The Alvin boys also fell to Lake on Friday by a 67-55 count in Houston. The Falcons jumped to a 23-11 lead after one period and extended their cushion to 40-25 at intermission.
Individual scoring totals for the Yellowjackets (who host Clear Creek on Tuesday at 7 p.m.) were unavailable at press time.
In other area action, the Manvel Mavericks snapped a four-game skid with a 73-69 win over Willowridge on Friday in Houston.
The Mavs (17-10, 5-5 in 24-5A) trailed 22-11 after one period, but the cut the margin to 34-30 at the break and then drew even with Eagles at 49-49 heading into the final eight minutes of regulation.
Manvel next hosts Angleton on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The Lady Mavericks (17-11 overall, 8-4 in district) also rallied from an early first quarter deficit to top Willowridge by a 35-30 count Friday night in Manvel.
The Manvel girls play at Angleton on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Both state ranked Shadow Creek hoop squads also rolled to victories on Friday.
The SC boys topped Angleton by a 88-44 count in Pearland behind 26 points apiece behind Ramon Walker and Shawn Jones and 11 points by Rodney Byrd.
The 26-point performance was the second straight for Walker, who hit the go-ahead bucket in the Sharks’ 74-71 nailbiter on Jan. 21 in Manvel.
Shadow Creek plays (20-2 overall, 10-0 in 24-5A) next plays at Rosenberg Terry on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The Lady Sharks (24-4 overall, 11-0) knocked off Angleton by a 55-45 count on the road Friday night and next host Terry on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
