IOWA COLONY - Tuning up for the Class 5A Division Football playoffs, the Manvel Mavericks topped Rosenberg Terry 38-20 Thursday night in the regular season finale for both teams at AISD Freedom Field.
The Mavs (5-1 overall, 3-0 in 10-5A) will now host Beaumont United in the first round of the playoffs Dec. 11 at Freedom Field with a 7 p.m. kickoff. United fell to Goose Creek Memorial 24-14, also on Thursday.
Manvel never trailed in Thursday’s contest with LeMarkus Owens’ 56-yard return on the opening kickoff setting up a nine-yard scoring run by De’Monte Seymour with 10:40 remaining in the opening period.
Antonio Rodriguez booted the extra point through the uprights for a 7-0 Manvel lead.
The Mavs’ defense immediately forced the Rangers to three-and-out and then again struck with a pair of big plays. Gabriel Larry hit Davyon Henderson with a 52-yard bomb and two plays later, the senior signal caller lofted a 29-yard scoring strike to Zion Johnkins to put Manvel up two scores with 7:12 left in the first.
Despite continuing to dominate the issue, the Mavs endured misfortunes on consecutive offensive series. Jordon Vaughn exploded for a 66-yard run, only to have the ball knocked free with the Terry defense making the recovery at the Rangers’ one-yard line. Rodriguez also had a 23-yard field goal attempt pushed wide due to the prevailing stiff breeze.
However, Tyree Scranton picked off a pass deep in Rangers’ territory to foil a Terry scoring threat and the Mavs promptly marched 76 yards in 15 plays for their third TD.
Vaughn plowed in from a yard out and Rodriguez added the PAT to increase the margin to 21-0 with 6:51 left in the second.
Terry almost reached the end zone before the break, but tight end Terrance Harrold was stripped of the ball at the Manvel two-yard line following a 17-yard reception and Manvel defensive back Collin Wright fell on the loose ball.
Seymour busted loose for a 45-yard gain to midfield two plays after Wright’s recovery and Ty Harris also sprinted for 23 yards in the series to pave the way for Kyler Williams’ 10-yard TD toss to Kelby Williams to cap the seven-play, 98-yard possession.
Manvel held a commanding 28-0 advantage at intermission.
Rangers’ quarterback Kellen Stewart finally got Terry on the board with a 29-yard keeper on the second’s half’s opening series, but Rodriguez answered with a 30-yard field goal to make it 31-6 midway through the third.
Owens later wrapped up the Manvel scoring with a 32-yard TD run late in the contest.
Harris paced the Mavs on the ground with 134 yards on 23 carries, while Vaughn added 103 yards on 12 carries and one TD and Seymour chipped in 95 yards on seven carries and one TD. Manvel compiled 427 total rushing yards.
