Alvin High School snapped a six-game losing skid with a 5-3 triumph over North Shore in their host baseball tournament on Thursday at Nolan Ryan Field.
The Jackets played no further games in the tourney with the school district cancelling athletic events for the rest of the week and the UIL suspending all competition through March 29, as well, due to Covid-19.
The UIL postponed the state boys’ basketball tournament last weekend in San Antonio, but is still looking into the possibility of the event being played at a later date and also resuming the spring athletic schedules around the state.
Alvin trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, but erupted for a four spot. Levi Whitlock smacked a double to left field to score both Erik Vasquez and Austin Hinson for a 3-2 Alvin lead and after Carson Keithley’s single, Grant Davis plated Whitlock with a sacrifice fly.
Keithley then dashed home with the fifth tally on a North Shore error. Connor Keithley picked up the win on the hill for Alvin in relief. Hinson and Tanner Marek each had two hits in the contest and Whitlock drove in three runs.
The Yellowjackets dropped a 1-0 decision to Ridge Point in non-district baseball action on March 10 in Missouri City.
Will Pendergrass drove in the game’s lone tally for the Panthers in the bottom of the sixth inning. Carson Keithley and Levi Whitlock both delivered solid performances on the hill for Alvin (2-9).
Dylan McCoy joined Kyler Mentzel and Tanner Marek with hits in the contest for the Jackets.
In other area high baseball gamess, the Shadow Creek Sharks opened 24-5A play with a 9-2 victory over the Manvel Mavericks on Tuesday in Pearland.
The Mavs held a 2-1 lead until the Sharks erupted for a three-run fifth inning and five five more tallies in the sixth.
Lloyd Richards and Will Shankle drove in two runs apiece for Shadow Creek to back winning pitcher Cameron Mouton (eight hits, six strikeouts, two walks), while Juan Guzman provided three hits at the plate. Guzman and Quentes Miles also smacked doubles in the contest.
Jaden Johnson and Mickey Johnson drove in the Manvel runs with Dillan Novak and Isaiah Walker collecting two hits each.
