The Manvel Mavericks erupted for a five-run sixth inning to break open a close game and collect a 10-4 triumph over Shadow Creek in a one-game 24-5A Baseball seeding playoff Saturday afternoon in Pearland.
Both area diamond squads, who entered the contest with 10-5 district marks, will be competing in the Class 5A bi-district playoffs later this week with this also being the Sharks’ first ever appearance in the postseason.
Third-seeded Manvel (13-12) meets the runner-up from 23- 5A at a site and time to be determined, while Shadow Creek (17-8-1) will play the district champion, also at a site and time to be determined.
Dillon Novak drove in a pair of runs and Isaiah Walker went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Mavs, while Warren Shankle belted a two-run homer in the seventh and Joseph Gomez also had a pair of hits for the Sharks.
Parker Carruth (double) and Tyler Labbe (single) both collected RBI hits in the frame and Novak added a two-run double in the seventh.
In other area baseball action, the Alvin Yellowjackets suffered a 4-3 defeat in the regular season finale to Dickinson Friday night at Nolan Ryan Field.
The loss combined with wins by both Clear Creek and Clear Lake eliminated the Jackets (10-11 overall, 4-8) from the playoff race. Creek and Lake met on Saturday in a play-in game for the fourth and final playoff spot with the Falcons rallying for a 9-7 win in Dickinson.
Despite falling behind to the Gators by an early 4-0 count for the second straight game in the series, the Jackets fought back to make things close. However, Alvin also hurt its own cause by leaving seven runners on base.
Carson Keithley joined Levi Whitlock and Tanner Deitrich with two hits apiece to lead Alvin, while Whitlock, Austin Hinson and Erick Vasquez all belted doubles in the contest.
