Kyler Mentzel

Fresh off receiving most valuable player honors in 23-6A, Alvin Yellowjackets’ senior hurler Kyler Mentzel was named to the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Class 6A All-State First team  earlier this week.

The Tarleton signee, who helped the Yellowjackets advance to the playoffs and capture the 23-6A crown for the first time since 2016, went  a stellar 8-2 on the mound with a .663 ERA, 113 strikeouts and six earned runs in 63.1 innings pitched. Mentzel also batted a lofty .364 with 22 RBI’s, 27 runs scored, three HR’s, eight doubles and three triples.

After advancing to the postseason, the Jackets swept Clear Creek in the best-of-three bi-district series with Mentzel getting the win in game two with a two-hit shutout and 15 strikeouts. Mentzel also delivered a 10-strikeout performance in game two of the Jackets’ area playoff series against North Shore.

Other highlights for the right-hander included a 16-strikeout outing against Strake Jesuit in 23-6A play, 14 K’s against Clear Creek during non-district play and 13 strikeouts against Shadow Creek during district play.

Mentzel was joined on the THSBCA’s first team by pitchers Josh Barnhouse (Prosper) and Mason Marriott (Tomball); catchers Cole Dillon (Rockwall) and Micahel Weidner (Midland Lee); first baseman David De Hoyos (Smithson Valley) and Ryan Brome (Katy); second baseman Marco Villarreal (Laredo Alexander) and Dylan Schriewer (New Braunsfel); third baseman Gregorio Campos (United South) and Jacob Castillo (Round Rock); shortstops Travis Sanders (Copperas Cove), Easton Culp and Vincent Banda (S.A. Brennan); and outfielders Coldon Kiser (Frenship), Kassen Wells (Smithson Valley) and Tien Banks (Odessa Permian).

The second team included pitchers Jake Storey (Dallas Jesuit), Elian Balmaceda (Cy Falls) and Josh Coleman (San Antonio Johnson); catchers Easton Carmichael (Prosper) and Nick Lazzara (Dallas Jesuit); first baseman Eduardo Saenz (United South) and Nick Greaney (Richardson Pearce); second baseman Zack Zarko (Hurst L.D. Bell) and Ryne Farber (SA Johnson); third baseman Aiden Huerta (Katy); shortstops Trevor Roper (Midland Lee) and Rodric Black (Hurst L.D. Bell); and outfielders Wes Campbell (SA Churchill) and Mathew Brooks (Cedar Ridge).

Players selected to the third team were pitchers Garrett Stratton (Strake Jesuit), James McGlumphy (Round Rock) and Victor Loa (Los Fresnos); second baseman Ahmar Donatto (Summer Creek); third baseman Danny Valdez (Cedar Ridge); shortstops Frayner Chavez (Little Elm) and Dillon Shaner (Richardson Pearce); and outfielders Jared Thomas (Waxahachie), Lane Brewster (Clear Creek) and Tripp Cromer (Bridgeland).

Other notable selections from the THSBCA included 5A regional finalist Friendswood gaining two first team selections with pitcher Jacob Rogers and first baseman Izaac Pacheco.

Mavs’ duo selected to GHBCA All-Star contest - The Manvel Mavericks’ duo of outfielder Tyson Dawson and shortstop Isaiah Walker will be both competing for the senior red team in the Greater Houston  Baseball Coaches Association’s All-Star game Tuesday at Deer Park High School at 7 p.m.

Dawson, a first team 22-5A pick, batted .379 for the bi-district finalist Mavericks with 28 RBI’s and 22 runs scored, while second team selection Walker batted .301 with 16 RBI’s, 32 runs scored and nine stolen bases.

The Mavs took eventual state champion Barbers Hill to the limit in the teams’ bi-district playoff series with the Eagles requiring a walk-off rally to escape an upset by Manvel in the third and deciding game.
